The project Hairy Matter investigates humans’ relationship with body hair in today’s society, imagining a speculativ future in which humans will be in contact with their animality and therefore make peace with their body hair. The project reflects on the stereotypical relationship that society has with women’s body hair while wondering about less anthropocentric futures. Women from a young age are forced to satisfy societal beauty standards on a daily basis. Body hair removal is seen as part of the norm for women in Europe and women who do not remove their body hair are very often compared to animals. In order to explore this topic, the project is driven by the question “What if body hair was accepted by humans in a society that has found the connection with animality?”. Humans put themselves on the top of the hierarchical pyramid and hairiness reminds them of their animal origin which symbolizes a threat to the top position they have created. Hairy Matter proposes a speculative opportunity to imagine a future where humans could reposition themselves in relationship with nature and animals and therefore change the perspective towards body hair. 


Hairy Matter presents a collection of textile wearable artifacts promoting dialogue around the topic and shifting the perception of body hair from disgust to celebration by using irony and humor as a method. The project aims to open a discussion rather than solve a problem.
Hairy Matter is the master project of Carlotta Sanna and Petra Vicianová.

The project investigates the emotion of disgust and its ability to influence people's choices. It consists of a research paper and experiment which is trying to prove if different settings can influence people’s disgust sensitivity.

We live in a time when sustainability is becoming an increasingly important value for many people. This affects what we consume and how much we consume. Acting or thinking sustainably seems like a standard for everybody, especially in Western countries. Living more sustainably is a matter of choices and we, humans, first have to be willing to make these sustainable choices. Unfortunately, it’s not always an easy choice. Every day most people have to deal with different emotions that have the potential to influence their behavior. One of the powerful emotions controlling people’s ability “to choose” is disgust.

For finding an answer to the research question "How can different settings affect people's disgust sensitivity?", two interviews were conducted - one rather conventional and one a bit provocative.&#38;nbsp; The purpose of these interviews was to observe people’s behavior and notice some changes depending on the settings. The theme of the interviews is menstruation because the menstruating body and menstrual blood are often associated with shame and disgust.

The first interview was intended to set up a neutral sterile mood and environment, no props were used during the interview.

The red color dominated the whole setting during the second interview to enhance the menstruation topic.
To evoke a feeling of disgust, a warm strawberry jam was pouring into participants' hands while clean menstruation products were lying on the table.

What if we could have fun while maintaining our furniture? Would the furniture last longer?


This was the main question in this project focused on sustainable change in furniture consumption.

Depicted mock-ups represent repairing tools that could be used for maintaining the furniture. Different kinds of brushes for cleaning textiles, tools for sanding wooden surfaces . . .


Abstract shapes encourage users to find their way how to use these tools and thus transform the repairing process into a special experience. The objects can be seen as functional tools as well as decoration objects.

The speculative project focused on the relationship between human and non-human species, respectively the relationship between humans and plants.

Almost everyone has any potted plant at home. We can no longer call these houseplants wild species growing freely in nature. They are domesticated now and their significant feature, the root system, is closed in a pot without the possibility to communicate with other plants. So as people who are forced to stay in their homes without the possibility of physical contact with the others during a pandemic.

What if humans could use the plant root system for interpersonal communication in times when they are forced to stay at home?

The plant root system reminds the infinitely branched worldwide web. It seems so easy, just insert the artifact into your navel, connect with plants and send messages . . . 

But isn’t it the other way around? Isn’t the human body just a tool that potted plants use for communication with the other ones?

Maybe humans are not anymore on the top of the hierarchical pyramid.

It's almost like having an indoor garden” she said. Later that day, we see her sitting in the living room, inserting &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;the instrument into her navel and connecting it to her potted plants. The same ritual everyday. The cord extended fro her navel and wrapped around the &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;roots in the vase. But there was an unspoken question:

The project is seeking another way how to 

to create more sustainable solutions to the process of dyeing textiles.

During a walk through Danish nature,&#38;nbsp; the stones became the inspiration for this project, especially their color diversity. 

After initial intuitive experiments and theoretical research of textile dyeing using mineral pigments, this technique proved to be functional with a great potential for the future.

This technique is still under development

How might we challenge, experience and investigate the attributes and difficulties within bioplastic combined with organic food waste, to get an understanding of the material and where it can be used in the most beneficial way?

Developing bioplastic based on gelatine, its variation and material experimentation. Using material-driven design method that includes understanding, creating, manifesting and designing.

There was no change in the ingredients but a change in shape and state. This was used to explore the properties of the material.

How can we shift people’s perception of waste, so that they view organic food waste as a resource with potential rather than an inevitable by-product?

Wasted is a project that aims to frame organic waste as a resource for making new materials and explore coloring techniques.&#38;nbsp; It explores organic food waste’s role and how it has been used in the past by different cultures. The main inspiration comes from the Inuit culture, with a focus on their resourcefulness on using everything they had and their definition of waste. The project follows this approach and set of values and applies it to material development techniques in one of the areas where is most needed: the overproduction of organic food products.

Organic food waste is a familiar concept to most of us, meaning its easily accessible and a common problem in modern societies. Nowadays, we have waste in abundance everywhere around us and this project is trying to shift people’s perception of it. Organic food waste is an ever-growing resource that needs to be tackled with new design approaches.


The goal of this project is to create a material that can be made of materials readily found in abundance, such as surplus organic waste. It consists of a variety of experiments exploring the development of food waste as a raw material.

The theme of the project Aren’t you missing that? is walking. The work shows this activity as an operation that is very often done automatically - we simply move from one place to another. This work aims to promote walking as an autonomous activity that should be done with full concentration and without a predetermined goal.

Series of analog and digital walk-recordings present this activity as a very rhythmic movement changing according to the terrain, type of the shoe character or the person itself. At the same time, this project opens a discussion about the suitability and unsuitability of the footwear commonly worn by people. The suitable shoe allows the foot to experience as much terrain information as possible. A shoe with a high sole does not allow this experience and disconnects humans from the earth.

In addition to experiments with walking, the outcome of this project is a collection barefoot shoes. Visual inspiration came directly from graphic walk-recordings and spectrograms obtained by a digital recording of walking sound.
